Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae

Enzootic pneumonia or Mycoplasmal Pneumonia of Swine (MPS), a chronic disease with a high morbidity and a low mortality, is caused by Mycobacterium hyopneumoniae.  The clinical signs include a chronic non-productive cough, retarded growth, slow onset and spread, and repeated occurrence of the disease.

The Mycobacterium hyopneumoniae antibody ELISA allows rapid screening for the presence of antibodies to Mycobacterium hyopneumoniae, which can be an indicator of exposure to the agent.  Monitoring the immune status of a herd with regard to Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae can play an important role in the control of this disease.
